The boy and the mask

Archive: Images

The Ladder 1957

The pretty boy takes off the mask of a sad woman and looks up serenely.

At least that was my first interpretation of this cover of an issue of The Ladder. I wondered was he casting aside a heterosexist image of gay men as faux-women. Or just the tears: that ugly assumption straight people make that gay men are unhappy.

Then I looked up The Ladder. It was published by The Daughters of Bilitis, an early Lesbian group. So I don?t really know if the person on the cover is male. It could be a gay woman tossing off sadness and stereotypes.

Having no reason to do otherwise I?ll retain my image of the pretty gay boy.

I'm a happily gay atheist. Homophobic, racist comments and conversion attempts are deleted.

Disagreement is fine but hate speech won't be tolerated. Even if you share my prejudices I'd rather you not insult other people who leave comments here.

This is a personal hobby and shouldn't be confused with a more general sort of public forum or chatroom. you'd like to know more about me check about page.
