Big Eden
Archive: Gay Themed
I wish I'd thought to write about Big Eden shortly after Charles and I watched it. I'd been waiting for Durham's Visart to get a copy for months. Even though they've picked up silly titles like Circuit they never got Big Eden.
It is set in a rural Anytown, U.S.A. that is like no place on earth. Everybody in town knows whose in love with whom (except of course, Henry, the central character). Everybody knows who's gay - I don't think the word gay was uttered once - and nobody cares. It is an Eden in that the sin of homophobia has never been known.
Henry's has never come out to the grandpa he's visiting. Grandpa knows and hints to Henry several times that he should come out. He never does out himself (a pity because I think that would've been a more satisfying springboard for the movie's resolution than grandpa's death).
The benign unreality of it all gives the movie a feeling oddly akin to an old romantic comedy: you know everything will turn out right by the end. I'll own to liking happy endings. They're hard to bring off without being sappy. I won't claim Big Eden isn't foolish and silly but for me it is a satisfying foolishiness.

I'm a happily gay atheist. Homophobic, racist comments and conversion attempts are deleted.
Disagreement is fine but hate speech won't be tolerated. Even if you share my prejudices I'd rather you not insult other people who leave comments here.
This is a personal hobby and shouldn't be confused with a more general sort of public forum or chatroom. you'd like to know more about me check about page.
