An Excellent Read:

Jonathan Raban's carefully detailed journey from Seattle to Juneau is beautiful and haunting. His book not only documents this magical area of the world as it now exists, but also as it must have existed when Captain Vancouver led his expedition in the 1790s. Raban's frequent digressions into native symbolism, primitive sociology and life aboard Captain Vancouver's vessel are fascinating and give the book substance that makes it transcend any travelogue. I got lucky again...:

Unlike several fine reviewers here at Amazon.com, I have not previously been exposed to the work of J Raban. As is often my style, I bought the book blind, being interested in the geographical setting of the story. I had half expected to immerse myself in a lengthy, technical and somewhat drowsy account of a sailing voyage conducted in the throes of a midlife crisis. I was very pleasantly surprised to find my preconceptions unraveled within the first three chapters. Raban writes with a depth and sincerity... more info

I initially picked up this book hoping for a sentimental journey in the area where I grew up. The inside passage holds a special mystique among Pacific Northwesterners and is generally accepted as the most scenic, challenging, and historic way of getting from Seattle to Alaska.
