Wow. What a surprise!:

As a huge indie rock fan, you might be very surprised to hear that this is the first Modest Mouse cd I've ever picked up. I've been meaning to for years. Awhile ago, a friend loaned me a copy of The Moon and Antarctica, but I somehow got sidetracked and I never gave it a listen...but on a whim, I picked up this cd at the record store the other day along with Franz Ferdinand and the new PJ Harvey. This is definitely my favorite of the 3.

Far too much creativity is compromised with this album. In Good News, Brock's lyrics have lost the insightful, oblique edge that was so vibrant in Moon and Antarctica and Lonesome Crowded West. When the instrumentation isn't aping Tom Waits ("This Devil's Workday") or The Clash ("Black Cadillacs") or lapsing into funk that little becomes the band ("Dance Hall," "The View"), it's making turns for a tone that's less angular and more conventional.

It takes a lot for me to BUY music. I tend to borrow and dl more than anything else, but Good News For People Who Like Bad News is one of the rare CDs that I thought was good enough to spend 10 bucks on. The music is addictive. The World At Large is a lot of fun; Float On, as much as it's the song that introduced me to Modest Mouse, is somewhat eclipsed by other tracks; Ocean Breathless Salty is by FAR my favorite on the album; Bury Me With It reminds me of some other song that I can't put my name on, which... more info
