a matter of taste:

The problem with all 'best of' compilations is that everyone's taste differs- I'm no expert on Fela Kuti, but from the 4 or 5 albums that I have I noted several songs that are better than the ones included on this record. Politics and Funk:

The Best Best is a wonderful introduction to one of the world's great musicians and political activists. It's music that a lot of Americans can relate to, because Fela was influenced by American music (and in turn influenced it during his US tours in the 60s and 70s). Most of the numbers are fast, furious, full of very funky polyrhythms and great horn riffs that will remind the uninitiated of James Brown. Shakara (Out of print??):

Fela Kuti is the man, and this compilation is a good overview of the man; however, don't let the "best of 2000" label lead you to believe that all his individual albums aren't all wonderful in their own rite. In particular, the Shakara/London Scene 2-album-in-one, which boasts the first two songs on this cd. Incidentally it disappeared from Amazon for a while and now comes up as an import, but if you can get your hands on it don't hesitate.
