Vastly superior to the 2001 remake:

If you've studied Shakespeare, you know that for the most part, films of the Bard's plays just sit there. The same can be said of the brilliant play by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein and Joshua Logan. It just doesn't translate to film very well. That being said, if you're looking for a film version of "South Pacific" this is the one you need. Probably the Most Famous Score Ever:

Most musicals are lucky if there's one hit song, but Rodgers and Hammerstein's "South Pacific" has more deservedly well-known songs than almost any other show I can think of: Some Enchanted Evening, I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy, Younger than Springtime, Bali Hai, I Gotta Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair, You've Got to be Taught, This Nearly Was Mine, Honey Bun, There is Nothing Like a Dame, Happy Talk. I suppose only Irving Berlin's "Annie Get Your Gun" can come close on that point.

Another Let Down:

The first time I watched this I was hitting the sauce pretty hard with the result that I thought it was one of the greatest movies ever made. In the next few days I tried to re-watch it and there were some things I wasn't going for. (The interesting thing is I was drinking just as much, if not more.)
