THE lesbian coming of age story for now: 
Note - don't read this if you don't want to know the plot of the book in advance.
This is a deliberate lesbian coming of age/finding yourself novel - young Nancy, a Whitstable oyster girl (no, that's not the rude bit, even if it sounds like it) finds that she fancies women not men, follows a 'masher' (male impersonator) to the big smoke, ends up on the music hall stage as one herself before fleeing for the streets when she finds her lover sleeping with someone else - and a man no less. "SHE LOOKED LIKE A VERY PRETTY BOY": 
TIPPING THE VELVET is my favorite novel by Sarah Waters to date. I enjoyed her other novels but this book was much more enjoyable for me. As always, Waters' does an excellent job in recreating the hostility and desperation of Victorian London streets. I could actually vision the damp streets and feel the cold winds. TIPPING THE VELVET follows the life of Nancy as she discovers her true sexuality and comes to grip with it while living in a society that is not accommodating to lesbians. Damn sexy: 
Before I go into my thoughts on Tipping... I noticed a reviewer who suspects Sarah Waters of really being a man. In case anyone else is curious, I can confirm that she is female! I've twice worked at author events of hers, and she is most definately a woman (and a lesbian as if you needed telling!)
Anyway. I really enjoyed this book. Apart from having a wonderfully readable prose style. Waters is a master of structure and plot - the story mixes erotica, sentimentality, darkness, humour and growth... more info
