This book gets my vote as best all-around text for students: 
The image on the cover sets the tone here as Tony Birks lays out the basics of forming clay and developing beautiful, useful surfaces while inspiring us throughout with image after image of high aesthetic merit. Birks is an excellent writer and he presents information with clarity and colour in a simple and comprehensible manner (e.g. "Clay is weathered, decomposed granite and consists mainly of alumina and silica.") This book has absolutely helped me as a guide with my ceramics.
It covers a broad spectrum of information.
You will find colorful step by step instruction, glossary and
supply information in the back of the book.
For all pot throwers:
What a great book for all of us clay lovers. Not overwhelming yet offers information on about everything you need to know. I've had this book for several years and I keep getting out again and again.
