Good concept, witty, but tries too hard: 
I read this book when I was first coming out as a lesbian. The humor drew me in from the first page, where the main character finds hilariously understated ways of describing her mother's black-and-white view of the world. The caricatured characters as viewed through the discerning and somewhat opinionated eyes of a child only add to the subtle (and not-so-subtle) humor, even when the book is exploring serious issues. AN INSPIRED FIRST NOVEL: 
Jeanette Winterson's first novel is a comical, moving look at an adopted child growing up in the midst of religious fanatics. It is very well-written and the descriptions of people and places are so vivid as to just jump right off the page, taking you along for the ride, to experience the ups and downs of Ms. Winterson's life along with her. It's one woman's realization of her Unnatural Passsions (her mother's name for homosexuality) that are in no way acceptable in the Pentecostal church. The scenes based... more info
A waste of time: 
It starts off interesting but the rambling almost stream of conciousness style eventually drags the book down. I think its one of those books that would make more sense after seeing the film, rather than the other way around.
