The greatest Japanese movie, and one of the best ever:

Aside from Lawrence of Arabia, I cannot imagine another movie in excess of three hours that has held me this captive. Certainly, Kurosawa's masterpiece, one of the greatest of adventure movies.

Criterion has done its usual superb job in the nearly flawless transfer. Fully deserving its current status in critics' and audience polls, Seven Samurai is cinema at its very finest.

Its journey West over the last fifty years has been piecemeal. Initially, it was released in a severely truncated version, and was still hailed as a masterpiece. Gradually, its runtime was added to block by block, until finally we have the film as it was originally intended.
