This is how unit histories should be written!:

Since reading Citizen Soldiers about a year ago, Stephen Ambrose has been one of my favorite military historians. Having read several different unit histories before, I found Band of Brothers a refreshing exception. Choosing more personal level instead of usual "platoon this did that while being supported by X squad" is an excellent way of telling about small unit actions. Band of Brothers vs Flags of our Fathers:

I bought Ambrose's Band of Brothers with the intent of reading it simultaneiously with the HBO broadcast of the mini-series. The book is so good and so readable, I finished it one week; it's that good a book.
Now that I'm done, I've started comparing it to Bradley's Flags of our Fathers. And for a number of reasons, I think Bradley edges out Ambrose here. I'll tell you why:

Powerful piece of history:

Band of Brothers follows an elite group of soldiers in World War II. Did I say "an" elite group? I may be understating them a bit; from this book, they appear to be one of the greatest collection of soldiers to ever face combat, a group a young men who excelled in all endeavors and played a major part in winning the Second World War.
