Honey for the soul:

If you liked Kaye Gibbon's "Ellen Foster" then Lily Owens will capture your heart. When her father, T. Ray, punished her by making her kneel on grits, I immediately knew that she was a survivor and he was a coward. May, June, and August Boatwright, the beekeeping sisters, and their Black Madonna honey were exquisite. May's tortured soul taught me about empathy gone awry. The Secret Life of Bees is a charming and heart-warming story. During the summer when she is 14, Lily goes on a journey to uncover the mystery of her mother's past. In the process, she does a lot of growing up and she meets people who change her life for the better. This is a beautifully written novel about a motherless young girl who struggles to find happiness and forgiveness. Left with a crude father to live on a peach farm, life is anything but content. She yearns to find something more and takes the opportunity to do so when her nanny is thrown into jail. Together the pair run away in search of happiness(and safety).
