As sad as it is unhappy:

Dear less than fortunate book reader,

If you are reading this review under your own free will, please stop immediately. Alternatively, if you are reading this because someone has threatened to make you eat various flavors of oddly shaped candy if you don't read this, it is even more urgent that you stop. It would be much more pleasant to read a book about horses, or maybe The Littlest Elf.

Appropriate for young readers? Not so much.:

As a bookseller, I've noticed kids are devouring the books of this series. Itching to see what the all the fuss is about, I picked up the first two. I'd heard the books were dark, but funny, and good for developing children's vocabulary, and, seeing the positive critical reviews, I'd recommend them to my customers. After having read the first two, I no longer recommend them.

Very Original!:

A very interesting, original story about all the bad things that happen to the 3 Baudelaire children. I absolutely loved the way this book was written and seems to flow smoothly.

However, I think that some of the situations in the book were depressing, and may be scary for very young children. Otherwise this book was wonderful, and I found myself rooting for the Baudelaire children, and despising Count Olaf and his friends.
