My favorite book of the year:
The review in New York Times Book Review, page 5 (or so) piqued my interest. Got a copy and read an essay or two right away. Read another over a bowl of cheerios before going to bed.
She's just a funny woman who tells a great and warm story. I've read them all now and find myself cracking up during the day, thinking about her stylish grandmother or her liitle penny pooper. I wish I could hear her take on my family.
Funny, not hysterical:
I liked this book - didn't love it. Some pieces I skipped entirely if they seemed too self-indulgent. The trappings of her life are not things I can personally relate to, and at times it's hard to see past the material things to the humanity beneath them. "What Happened After the Chicken Crossed the Road", a piece dealing with her grandmother's slow decline into dementia, was poignant and moving. "Jack Has A Thermos," an essay about her father, I found hilarious. But I didn't care a whit for her infertility...more info
So close to Sedaris:
After gobbling up all of David Sedaris's books, I went searching for similar writers. I read David Rakoff (who is good), but then I found this book and Cynthia Kaplan. She is at once hilarious, personal and empowering and I felt an immediate connection with so many of her essays/stories. Her writing style is so extraordinarily personal, you feel as if she is in the room telling you these awesomely funny stories. I wish she had other books out. I couldn't put this one down.
