Die Frau Ohne Schatten: not anti-abortion

Archive: Culture Low and High

Being ?politically correct? can be as sensitive to conservatives as liberals. Either way it can easily abuse the language and expose painful literal mindedness.

A Los Angeles Times music critic who wrote that a Richard Strauss opera was ?pro-life?meaning a celebration of lifewas stunned to pick up the paper and find his review changed by a literal-minded copy editor to read ?anti-abortion.?

Music critic Mark Swed said the copy editor was adhering to a strict Times policy banning the phrase ?pro-life? as offensive to people who support abortion, and didn?t seem to realize that the epic Strauss opera Die Frau Ohne Schatten had nothing to do with that politically charged issue.

I'm a happily gay atheist. Homophobic, racist comments and conversion attempts are deleted.

Disagreement is fine but hate speech won't be tolerated. Even if you share my prejudices I'd rather you not insult other people who leave comments here.

This is a personal hobby and shouldn't be confused with a more general sort of public forum or chatroom. you'd like to know more about me check about page.

Thanks, Richard
